The battery is where most of your solar budget goes — and where cheap systems quietly fail two years in. In Nigeria you’ll be quoted three types: tubular, AGM, and LiFePO₄ lithium. The cheapest on day one is almost never the cheapest over ten years.
The three battery types you’ll be quoted
- Tubular (flooded lead-acid) — the cheapest upfront and very common in Nigeria. Needs maintenance (topping up with distilled water) and typically lasts 3–5 years.
- AGM (sealed lead-acid) — maintenance-free, but usually a shorter life than tubular and still lead-acid at heart.
- LiFePO₄ (lithium iron phosphate) — the highest upfront cost, but 10+ years of life, far more usable capacity, and the chemistry InfraSol installs.
Why the upfront price is misleading
Two numbers decide the real value of a battery: how much of it you can safely use, and how many times you can use it. Lead-acid batteries should only be discharged to about 50% before their life drops sharply — so a “200Ah” tubular bank delivers far less usable energy than the label suggests. LiFePO₄ comfortably uses 80–90%, and survives thousands of cycles rather than hundreds.

Over a decade, a lead-acid bank is often replaced two or three times. Once you count those replacements and the smaller usable capacity, LiFePO₄ usually wins on total cost — not just on performance.
Nigeria’s conditions punish lead-acid
Two things age lead-acid batteries fast, and Lagos has both in abundance: heat, and long spells at a partial state of charge (frequent outages and cloudy days mean a battery rarely sits full). LiFePO₄ shrugs off both. That gap between lab specs and real Lagos life is exactly where cheaper batteries disappoint.
The right question isn’t “which battery is cheapest?” — it’s “which battery costs least per usable kilowatt-hour over ten years?” In Nigeria, that’s almost always LiFePO₄.
